PRP has been widely used in medicine for tissue healing and has been subjected to extensive clinical trials showing great effectiveness. This treatment has now become popular in the aesthetic industry, where doctors use the natural healing power of Platelet-rich plasma to rejuvenate and refresh ageing skin.

Platelets contain a high content of "growth factors" - proteins that help to heal injured tissue or damaged skin. Upon re-injection they release their growth factors - these trigger surrounding cells to proliferate, in turn stimulating repair, increasing volume and rejuvenating the skin.

The therapy uses a small sample of your own blood to harvest the platelet rich plasma. This is then treated (in a centrifuge) to collect the platelet rich plasma. This will be activated and re-injected into the targets area.

The therapy is ideal to plump skin, smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, and give an overall more fresh and glowing anti-ageing appearance.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy - how does the treatment work?

A small amount of blood is taken and placed into a centrifuge, where the blood is spun in order to separate the red blood cells from the platelet plasma. The platelet plasma, which is the component of the blood that is known for being highly effective in treating burns and skin injuries, is then activated and injected into the chosen area.

When the platelet plasma is injected into the skin, the platelets release their growth factors. The growth factors stimulate other cells surrounding the injection site, plumping them up and causing them to increase in volume. The platelet plasma sends out signals to other cells in the body when it is injected, telling them to rush forward to the injection site.

Fibroblast cells are stimulated: these are the cell types producing collagen. Collagen gives skin a youthful appearance. As we age, collagen is produced less and less, causing wrinkles and fine lines in the skin. Therapies such as PRP therapy stimulate collagen production.

Another cell stimulated during the process is the pre-adipocyte cell, which is a cell type that can convert into a fat cell, which is especially important in the face to fill out lines and to contour the face.

What does the procedure involve?

A small sample of blood will be taken by a highly experienced doctor, then platelet plasma will be extracted from the red blood cells.

After a topical local anaesthetic is applied - the PRP will then be injected into the skin. Injections, using a very fine needle, will be given multiple times in multiple locations in order to give an overall improvement to the area.

The whole procedure usually takes about 1 hour.

It may take a few weeks for the results of the PRP therapy to become visible, but with two to three top-up treatments, you can expect the results of PRP therapy to last for up to one and a half years.

Recovery time?

Recovery time is minimal with Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy, you will be able to resume your normal daily routine almost immediately.

However, you may on occasion experience some redness and bruising - any side effects should dissipate within a few days following the procedure.

Who is suitable?

Most patients are suitable for PRP therapy, and it is recommended as a safe treatment for individuals who are unable to undergo more invasive procedures such as a full face lift.

Individuals with platelet dysfunction syndrome, critical thrombocytopenia, hypofibrinogenaemia, haemodynamic instability, sepsis, acute & chronic infections and chronic liver pathology and those undergoing anti-coagulant therapy are also not suitable candidates.
